The People

The Slagles were a German family who had settled in this valley in the late 18th century. By the late 19th century a large family had grown up in a house down the road from the little Methodist church of Fairview. The mother of this family died when the children were still young and the family was raised by the oldest sister, America Anzinette. Three of the brothers built a house about two miles away and to that house the youngest son brought a wife, Mamie Lee Lundy. He also gave a lifelong home to the sister who had raised him.

The Lundys were English and lived about 20 miles away in Grosclose. About the time that Mamie married Henry Slagle, her sister Lilly Mae married a man of Pennsylvania Dutch heritage who owned a dairy farm about one mile away from the home Mamie went to.

Henry Slagle and Mamie Lundy's first child was Vivian Ardelia Slagle, this project's storyteller.
